Courts and Their Judgments was originally published fifteen years ago. At the time, it was praised by Chief Justice Venkatachaliah ('An outstanding effort), Fali S Nariman ('An extraordinary book)' and Ashok Desai ('unputdownable'). The initial idea was to update the book by writing up developments in the topics that were covered by the book in the last fifteen years. But that would make the book lose focus - for the courts have gone in every direction since then. Instead, this book, while being a companion to Courts and Their Judgements, will be an independent book. Anita Gets Bail brings into focus different facets of the working of our courts - the district courts, the High Courts as well as the Supreme Court - through actual instances and judgements. Care has been taken (i) not to impute any motive to any judge or court (ii) to base every observation on court records and judgements (iii) to ensure that when an example is taken up, it is discussed in detail so that no one can allege that we are just picking a sentence here and a sentence there (iv) to infer constructive lessons from each example on how things may be improved.
